UCR Tech Series - The Technicalities of Getting from Street to Track
Please watch for a new series of tech articles written by Phil Downe, UCR Director and Provinz Newsletter Publisher, beginning with the December issue of Provinz. Phil will describe the transformation of his 944 from a street car to an all-out track car. He will be happy to answer questions in this forum, pertaining to that project and his series of articles, aided by his mechanic Markus Blaszak, UCR's DE Registrar. Let's have some fun with this. Any and all questions and input are welcome! Thank You, Kye Wankum, Provinz Editor.

UCR Tech Series - The Technicalities of Getting from Street to Track
Hey Phil, I understand that some race series do not require the 944 to have a fuel cell. I believe that you are not (yet) racing the car but, did you decide to install a fuel cell in your track car? If so, what product did you choose and why? What was the cost of purchase and installation? Difficulties? If you haven't installed one, I've heard that you are so slow and brake in such uncommon places that, hey, aren't you worried about being rear-ended and the whole thing blowing up like a Pinto? Thanks for your insight, Kye.

From Street to Track - Fuel Cells
Hey Kye, good to hear from you. There are as many different rules for fuel cells in race cars as there are racing series. However, I've not come across any fuel cell requirements for Porsche 944's in any of the race series I'd be interested in participating. All 944's since the 85 1/2 have had moulded plastic tanks straight out of the factory. Talking to my mechanic, he's never heard of a rupture and there have been some pretty hard hits with the rear ends over the years.

As far as that erratic driving, well i still get excited and get those damn pedals mixed up from time to time.

Cheers,
