Lottery of Life

E-mail Print PDF

This is not exactly a Porsche story, but as Webmaster, if I can fit the word Porsche into the article (watch for it!), I feel justified in publishing it in this forum.

Last night, was riding my bicycle east along Eglinton, trying out my new Continental Ultra Gatorskins. I was 3/4 the way throught the Bayview intersection, when I heard a bang and a flapping noise. I looked left to see what looked like a large piece of sheetmetal flying throught the air, crossing the southbound lane, just south of the intersection. I had enough time to speculate that it might be a piece of a billboard, or a truck fender ( turned out to be a median marker sign).

Then  there was another bang, screeching of tires, a bigger bang and more screeching tires. I looked right and back just in time to see two cars passing a few feet behind my rear wheel, locked in a deadly embrace. They rode up on the sidewalk corner, coming to a stop a few feet before the bus stop. I didn't even notice that beside me  a car was spinning in the middle eastbound lane.

The two cars on the sidewalk were totalled, airbags deployed. I walked around the two cars to see a man lying in the street, with an obvious leg injury. It turns out that he had been the driver of one of the cars. There were no other visibly injured people. This is a very pedestrian busy intersection, with many blind people transferring from north-south to east west.  I felt that all of us had just won the lottery of life. Especially me. I estimated I had been travelling at about 20 feet/second, so only about 250 milliseconds had separated me from disaster.

You never know when you are entering the last 250ms of your life, so enjoy it. Buy yourself a new (or used) Porsche.
