Porsche ProselytizingOnce upon a time certain white men, and they were always white men, would set out from their European homes on a mission to save the so-called savages from their godless, by which they meant non-Christian, ways. Or perhaps the goal was to bring their concept of law, order and enlightenment to those they thought less fortunate. Whatever the motivation, such behaviour is generally frowned upon in the early 21st century and rightly so. However, such notions lend themselves to a concept I call Porsche Proselytizing, or maybe, The Porsche Driver’s Burden. Read more... Comments (1)

The Canadian Motorsport Heritage Foundation is pleased to announce that Michael Andretti will be inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame, at the 18th annual Hall of Fame Gala which will be held at On the Park in Toronto on April 21, 2012. Andretti, who retired from active racing in 2003 to focus on team ownership, won 42 CART/Champ Car races in his 20-year racing career, including a record seven Toronto Indy victories.
“We are delighted to welcome Michael Andretti into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame,” said Dr. Hugh Scully, Chairman of the Canadian Motorsport Heritage Foundation. “Two years ago the Hall of Fame introduced an international category at our annual induction gala to formally recognize non-Canadians who had made significant contributions to motorsports in Canada. Besides entertaining thousands of race fans with his on-track performances in Canada over the years and holding the record for the most wins at the Toronto Indy, Michael Andretti’s contribution to the promotion of motorsports in Canada and to the development of Canadian drivers, is well established. We are proud to be able to recognize him in this way and are pleased to announce that he will be on hand at our induction ceremony on April 21.” Son of legendary motorsports icon, Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti has left a lasting legacy of his own in the world of open-wheel racing both as a driver and team owner. In 2008 his love of Toronto was instrumental in his decision to purchase the assets of the Toronto Indy, a move that brought the marquee event back to the city after a one year absence. On January 11, 2012 Andretti also announced that Andretti Autosport had signed Canadian racing talent James Hinchcliffe to a multi-year contract. Hinchcliffe will be present at the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame induction ceremony and will be a guest speaker. I'm extremely honoured to be inducted into the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame. Throughout my career, I’ve always considered Canada to be almost like my second home. The Canadian race fans have been some of the most supportive I’ve ever seen and I’m thrilled that almost a quarter of my career wins came on Canadian soil and in front of such enthusiastic fans.” Michael Andretti will be inducted into to the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame along with seven Canadians: Dick Foley of Montreal, Quebec; Rudy Bartling of Courtrice, Ontario; Robin Edwardes, of L'Orignal, Ontario; Paul Manson of Toronto, Ontario; Ben Docktor of Calgary, Alberta, Greg Steward of Halifax, Nova Scotia and Norm Ellefson, who now lives in Spokane, Washington. The Hall of Fame was initially introduced in 1993 and now has over 100 inductees from across Canada. An International category was added two years ago. Michael Andretti joins Bobby Rahal, Carroll Shelby and Professor Sid Watkins as inductees in the International category. The Hall of Fame comes under the jurisdiction of the Canadian Motorsport Heritage Foundation created by a group of leading international businessmen. Canadian Tire Motorsports Park… say what?
I recently had the pleasure of having a conversation with Ron Fellows, together with UCR Photo Editor, Eshel Zweig. Rather than using a structured interview format, we simply sat down over coffees to have an informal chat. Once again, Ron, ‘the mayor of Mosport’ displayed his famous nice-guy-attitude that has won him the adoration of many, many fans the world over. Even though he is a very busy man these days, once he got talking, he seemed completely unhurried and relaxed, taking his time to explain the ins and outs of the circumstances surrounding his racing career.

Spring's First DriveIn summertime village cricket is the delight of everyone. Everyone in 1970’s England maybe, but for UCR members Porsche-driving is the summertime delight and rousing the car from its winter slumber is one of the seminal events on the calendar. Given that the GTA seems to have been visited by the ghost of a post-apocalyptic, polar bear free, winter future this year, the big event retreated to what I think is a record in my case, March 13. Toronto is the type of city that fancies itself “progressive”, Ron Fellows SocialTuesday april 13th,2012 was a lucky day for Upper Canada Region. Our guest speaker for our monthly dinner was the legendary canadian driver Ron Fellows. attendance at the Mimico Cruising Club was a sellout with additional dinner tables added. Ron is internationally known as one of Canada's greatest ever drivers and you only have to google his name to see his many accomplishments. He began driving gokarts at the late age of fifteen before moving up thru various rides to become a General Motors factory race driver. Along the way he has won many championships in many different types of cars.

Manual vs. PDK Part IA few months ago there appeared a series of articles in Panorama that posed the question, “can a car without a manual transmission be considered a sports car?” Panorama published a number of letters on both sides of the manual-PDK divide, but in its ever-diplomatic way failed to offer a conclusion. I labour under no such constraint and with no fear of lost advertising revenue or access to press cars will posit that sports cars have clutches. Not some fancy dual clutch gizmo but a real honest to goodness clutch connected to a pedal operated by the left leg. Porsche at the Geneva Motor Show 2012
